Can you monetise AI music on YouTube?

Short answer: in practice, yes. The part people get wrong is ownership, and the two questions are not the same.

This question is everywhere for a reason. Threads warn that fully AI generated music cannot be copyrighted, and that is broadly right. Then everyone assumes it means the audio is unsafe to use. That does not follow.

2 questions, tangled together

May I use it? This is a licence question, and the answer comes from whichever tool made the audio. Some tools grant commercial use only on a paid tier. Free tiers often grant none.

Do I own it? This is a copyright question. In the United States, a work needs human authorship to be registered. Audio generated from a short brief, with no further human input, generally does not qualify. Rules differ by country.

So the realistic position is this. You can use the audio and run ads over the video. You probably cannot stop someone else using a similar track. For a creator scoring their own video, only the first half matters.

What actually gets a video claimed

Content ID does not detect that audio is AI generated. It matches audio against a database of registered recordings. A claim arrives because your track matches something in that database, not because a model made it.

Which is why the free route is the risky one. Music pulled from a "no copyright" channel has often been uploaded and registered by someone else already. Creators say the same thing about it. They cannot tell who is behind the channel, or what rights they hold.

Audio generated for your video, on the day, from your brief, is not in that database. That is the practical argument for generating rather than searching.

Disclosure rules are about faces, not backing tracks

Platforms increasingly ask you to disclose synthetic content. Those rules aim at realistic depictions of people and events, such as a cloned voice or a fabricated scene. A generated music bed is not the target.

A cloned speaking voice is different. Disclose it if a viewer could mistake it for a real person. Policies change. Check the platform you publish on rather than a blog post from last year, including this one.
